What does a collaborating physician do for a nurse practitioner?
A primary care collaborating physician works with an NP where state law requires it. Depending on the state, that can include a written agreement, physician availability, prescribing rules, chart review or other requirements. NPs who meet their state’s independent practice requirements (often called full practice authority) may not need a collaborating physician for the same work.
GuardianMD helps eligible primary care NPs find a licensed physician whose background fits their practice and patients. We support the agreement, onboarding and ongoing workflow, so the relationship keeps working long after the first match.

Urgent care clinics
Medical director support for urgent care clinics
Urgent care clinics may need clinic-level clinical leadership on top of any physician relationships required for individual NPs or PAs. A medical director can help define the physician’s role in clinical protocols, quality processes, consultation and review of the services at your site.
Urgent care can include acute visits, basic procedures and other time-sensitive services. The physician qualifications, facility setup, supervision and in-person availability you need depend on your services and the rules that apply. A remote medical director arrangement does not automatically meet every urgent care or emergency care requirement.

Keeping your collaborating physician relationship active
Keeping physician responsibilities documented
In primary care, an NP may need a physician’s input on a case, a protocol update or a regular review. In urgent care, staffing changes or a new procedure may need the medical director’s attention. The GuardianMD platform keeps agreements, messages, protocols and chart review records together, so these duties don’t depend on scattered emails or memory.
Already have a physician relationship? Talk with us about supporting it in a more consistent workflow instead of replacing it.
Single and multi-location
Expanding an NP-led practice or urgent care group
Adding providers or locations can change your physician ratio, agreements, availability and licensing needs. Opening in another state needs its own state review. GuardianMD supports eligible clinics nationwide and can help coordinate physician relationships as you grow. For larger operations, see our multi-location medical director services.
Choosing physician support
How to find a collaborating physician or medical director for your clinic
GuardianMD can review your collaboration and medical direction needs separately and quote the services you need. There are no setup fees, physician fees are included in your monthly price, and we pay the malpractice insurance for the physician who provides your oversight. Remote communication is one part of a support arrangement, not a replacement for any required on-site clinical coverage.
