Fast physician matching in Ohio

Ohio certified nurse practitioners perform advanced practice nursing services in collaboration with one or more physicians or podiatrists. The relationship must be documented in a written standard care arrangement that addresses consultation, referrals, coverage, patient-management disagreements, and other applicable requirements.

GuardianMD helps eligible Ohio NPs find a physician whose license, specialty, and experience align with their nursing specialty and proposed services. For eligible physician assistants, GuardianMD separately supports matching with a supervising physician and organizing the applicable supervision agreement.

Whether you are launching a new healthcare business, replacing a physician relationship, or expanding your services, our team helps simplify physician matching and supports the documentation and workflows associated with the applicable Ohio relationship.

Who we serve

Collaboration for every practice type in Ohio

GuardianMD supports eligible Ohio nurse practitioners and physician assistants across a range of specialties, services, and business models. Each relationship is evaluated according to the clinician’s license type, scope, proposed services, nursing or medical specialty, and practice setting.

Practices may include:

  • IV hydration and wellness
  • Med spas and aesthetics
  • Medical weight management
  • Hormone therapy
  • Psychiatry and mental health
  • Primary care
  • Telehealth
  • Functional medicine

Ohio does not treat NPs and PAs as interchangeable provider types. NPs use standard care arrangements under the advanced practice nursing statutes, while PAs practice under physician supervision and a separate supervision agreement. GuardianMD considers each relationship and its supporting documents separately.

For practices with specialized clinical needs, physician matching also considers whether the prospective physician’s specialty is the same as or similar to the NP’s nursing specialty, as Ohio law generally requires.

Common questions

Collaboration in Ohio

What physician relationship does an Ohio nurse practitioner need?

Ohio nurse practitioners must practice under a written standard care arrangement with each collaborating physician or podiatrist. The arrangement addresses consultation, referrals, emergency coverage, patient-management disagreements, and other required provisions. The collaborator must be authorized to practice in Ohio and generally practice in the same or a similar specialty as the NP. Specific physician-specialty options apply to qualifying psychiatric-mental health NPs. GuardianMD helps eligible NPs find an Ohio-licensed physician suited to their specialty and proposed services. Review Ohio’s standard care arrangement requirements.

Can experienced nurse practitioners practice independently in Ohio?

Ohio does not currently provide an experience-based pathway that allows NPs to discontinue the required standard care arrangement after completing a certain number of practice hours or years. Experienced NPs must continue meeting Ohio’s collaboration requirements. Review Ohio’s nurse practitioner practice requirements.

Can my Ohio collaborating physician support me remotely?

Ohio allows NP collaboration through electronic communication and does not universally require the physician to be physically present. The collaborating physician must be continuously available to communicate in person or electronically. Whether a particular arrangement is appropriate depends on the services, patient needs, prescribing activities, practice setting, and applicable requirements. Read Ohio’s definition of physician collaboration.

Does my standard care arrangement need board approval or notification?

Ohio does not require advance approval of a standard care arrangement by the Board of Nursing, although the board may review it for compliance. A current copy must be retained by the NP’s employer, and certain hospital arrangements require hospital approval. NPs must report each collaborator’s name and business address to the board within 30 days after first engaging in advanced practice. Later additions or deletions generally must be reported within 30 days after the change takes effect. Separate procedures apply to certain terminations or a collaborator’s death. Review Ohio’s approval and notification requirements.

Can I change collaborating physicians if needed?

Yes. GuardianMD can help coordinate a transition, subject to physician availability, eligibility, and agreement terms. Changes require appropriate updates to relationship documents and board notifications. If a collaborator terminates the relationship before the arrangement expires, the NP must submit the termination notice to the Board of Nursing as soon as practicable. Ohio permits continued practice under the existing arrangement for up to 120 days after submission. A similar provision applies following a collaborator’s death and notification to the board. This is a limited transition provision, not permanent independent-practice authority. Review Ohio’s collaborator-transition provisions.

Are physician collaboration requirements the same for Ohio NPs and PAs?

No. Ohio NPs use a standard care arrangement, while physician assistants practice under physician supervision and a separate supervision agreement. PA agreements have their own requirements for responsibilities, document retention, and practice settings. GuardianMD evaluates eligible NP and PA relationships separately and supports the appropriate documentation for each provider type. Review Ohio’s physician assistant supervision-agreement requirements.

What support does GuardianMD provide after I am matched?

Depending on your provider type, practice, and service plan, GuardianMD support may include agreement documentation, applicable protocols, chart-review workflows, physician communication, renewal support, and organized records through the GuardianMD platform. Support is designed to help manage the physician relationship beyond the initial match. Services are subject to eligibility, plan availability, and applicable Ohio requirements. Clinical care, medical decisions, and professional compliance remain the responsibility of the licensed providers.
