Independent Nurse-Owned Clinic
From ICU Nurse to Healthcare Entrepreneur: How Mallory Capp Launched an IV Therapy Business

Mallory Capp transformed her ICU experience into a preventative health business, launching Michigan Immune Defense with physician oversight and compliance infrastructure powered by GuardianMD; all while maintaining full ownership.
The Results That Matter

The Challenge

After more than a decade as an ICU nurse, Mallory Capp saw firsthand how patients often lacked support until their conditions became severe. Motivated to shift toward preventative care, she set out to launch her own IV therapy business—but quickly encountered a major barrier: compliance and physician oversight requirements.
As a registered nurse, Mallory could not independently operate certain healthcare services without working under a physician’s supervision. Like many nurses entering entrepreneurship, she faced key challenges:
- Navigating medical director requirements
- Understanding scope-of-practice limitations
- Structuring the business to remain legally compliant
- Maintaining ownership and control without compromising safety
Attempting to partner informally with a physician introduced even more uncertainty around liability, responsibilities, and long-term scalability. Mallory needed a solution that would allow her to launch confidently, operate compliantly, and retain control of her business.
The Approach

To navigate the legal and structural challenges of starting her business, Mallory partnered with GuardianMD to access physician oversight and infrastructure required to operate within applicable regulatory frameworks. She needed clarity on how to properly structure her business and operate within the appropriate scope as a registered nurse.
Through GuardianMD, Mallory gained:
- Access to a medical director
- Clearly defined clinical protocols and scope-of-practice guidance
- A structured model for compliance
- Ongoing support to ensure safe, consistent care delivery
This gave Mallory the confidence to move forward, knowing she had the proper medical oversight in place. Instead of navigating uncertainty, she was able to build her business with a clear structure, trusted collaboration, and the ability to reach clinical support whenever needed.
The Impact

With GuardianMD’s infrastructure in place, Mallory successfully launched Michigan Immune Defense, an IV therapy clinic focused on preventative health and immune support.
The business is now:
- Delivering accessible wellness services that help patients stay healthy before illness escalates
- Expanding across the Metro Detroit area with additional locations and services
- Operating with confidence in its clinical and regulatory foundation
Most importantly, Mallory achieved her original goal: building a healthcare business that allows her to shift from reactive care to proactive health, all while maintaining full ownership and control.

Story
Mallory Capp has been a nurse for more than 14 years, spending most of her career in the intensive care unit at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Over that time, she worked closely with critically ill patients and eventually stepped into a leadership role as a unit educator, where she was responsible for training staff and maintaining clinical standards.
When COVID hit, her unit became one of the hospital’s primary COVID care units. That experience shifted her perspective on healthcare. She began to question the reactive nature of care and started researching ways people could support their immune systems earlier, before reaching a critical state.
That research led her to IV vitamin therapy and the role micronutrients can play in supporting overall health. She saw an opportunity to move from treating illness at its worst stages to helping people stay healthy in the first place.
The Problem: Nurses Want to Start Businesses but Need Physician Oversight
As she explored starting her own business, Mallory quickly ran into a common challenge. While she had the clinical experience to provide care, operating a healthcare business introduced a new layer of complexity. Like many registered nurses, she learned that certain services require a medical director and oversight. In many states, nurses cannot independently offer services like IV therapy without working under a physician.
This creates a significant barrier for nurses who want to become business owners. Some try to partner with physicians they know personally, but those arrangements often lead to confusion around ownership, liability, and responsibilities. Mallory explored those options but realized she needed a clearer and more structured solution. She wanted to maintain control of her business while still operating safely and legally under physician oversight.
The Compliance Barrier
The challenge was not her clinical ability. It was compliance. Questions around the role of a medical director, how to structure a physician relationship, and how to stay within her scope of practice made the process feel uncertain. Without clear answers, many nurses stop before they ever get started.
Mallory knew she needed more than just a physician. She needed guidance and a framework. That is when she discovered GuardianMD.
How GuardianMD Provides the Infrastructure
She first learned about GuardianMD through an IV therapy certification course that recommended the platform for medical direction and compliance support. From the start, the experience felt different from trying to find a physician on her own. Instead of a simple introduction, GuardianMD provided a structured physician oversight model and supporting infrastructure.
Through GuardianMD, Mallory was connected with a medical director. She gained guidance on how to properly structure her business, how to operate within legal requirements, and how to confidently provide care under physician oversight. Just as important, she had ongoing access to her physician through a platform that made communication simple and reliable.
This model allowed her to move forward with confidence while maintaining ownership of her company. Rather than giving up control or navigating uncertainty, she was able to establish the clinical and oversight infrastructure required to operate confidently.
Launching the Business
With that support in place, Mallory launched Michigan Immune Defense. Her clinic focuses on IV vitamin infusion therapy designed to support immune health and cellular wellness. By delivering vitamins and micronutrients directly into the bloodstream, these treatments allow for faster absorption and more effective support.
Her background as a nurse educator continues to shape how she works with patients. She takes time to explain how cellular health, nutrition, and lifestyle choices impact long-term wellness, helping clients better understand their own health.
The transition from hospital employee to business owner was not easy, but it was meaningful. What began as a nerve-wracking step quickly became something empowering, allowing her to provide care in a way that aligns with her values.
Growth and Impact
She knew she made the right decision during her very first client interaction. A patient dealing with COVID needed to travel internationally to see family they had not seen in years. After receiving treatment, they felt well enough to make the trip. That moment reinforced the purpose behind her work.
Since launching, Michigan Immune Defense has grown steadily. Mallory now serves clients in multiple locations across Metro Detroit and continues to expand her services. With physician oversight in place, she is able to develop new protocols and offerings with confidence.
Her journey reflects a larger shift happening across healthcare. Many experienced nurses want to build their own clinics, but compliance and regulatory complexity often stand in the way.
With the right structure and support, those barriers can be removed.
By partnering with GuardianMD, Mallory was able to build a compliant healthcare business while maintaining full ownership. Today, she is not only caring for patients, but also helping her community stay healthier long before they ever need hospital care.
